Fort

In our Pendragon campaign we have reached the Saxon Fort on the south coast, and plan to make a night time raid on it. We have archers and foot knights with us, and we hope to catch them by surprise.
We are at a river, across from a Saxon fort. We head up river to where the river traffic is quiet. Then we head round the back of the fort, around to where the boats are docked. Our archers stay on the far bank, whilst we and our men-at-arms plan what we are going to do. Our plan is to begin the attack after night fall, when most of the Saxons are hopefully asleep.
We give the signal to attack, and arrows land around the guard, and a few stick into him. They don’t kill him, but he is very upset. We start running towards him, hoping to secure the gate before anyone else can lock it against us. However, I feel a bit sorry for the Saxons after what we did to them last time, so my hatred for them isn’t that great.
A flaming arrow hits the Saxon guard, and he falls over. More flaming arrows start landing on the rooves inside the fort, and they begin to catch fire.
We make it to the gate, meeting Saxons as they come out. I stab at one wielding a battle axe, wounding him. Sirs Lupinus and Madog finish him off, and then Sir Madog also slays the other one. We charge into the fort.
Sir Madog is briefly fended off by a Saxon armed with a bucket.
I put down one Saxon, clearing the way for Sir Lupinus to charge into a bleary eyed Saxon knight stumbling mostly naked out of a building. The Saxon drops his sword in surprise as Sir Lupinus leaps upon him, and stabs him through with his sword.
Our men-at-arms start making their way around the fort, ganging up on any Saxons that they find. Sir Madog takes out the man with a bucket.
I run up to Sir Lupinus, and we both gang up on the Saxon coming out the house. Sir Lupinus and him clash their swords in a loud crash, but the Saxon is worse off, and is knocked down. I stick my sword through his chest.
Sir Lupinus and I split up, him heading down to help Sir Madog who has run into a group of skilled Saxon warriors, and myself setting upon another ceorl who has just woken up. Saxons continue to fall as to tidy up those who were on guard duty and already armoured. Most of them though have just been woken, and are lucky if they have had time to grab their axes and shields.
During the final moments of the battle, I am knocked down by one knight, just before he is finally killed.
I stumble to my feet, and help in the looting and burning. We take the Saxon heads, and put them in their boats and send them down stream towards their friends. We fade back into the woods, leaving the fort to burn down.
One of the things we loot is a small box with a lock. Once we get to somewhere safe, we force it with a dagger. Inside is a scroll which we can’t read the scroll, but it has the insignia of the late King Lot of Orkney.
Thinking that it might be important, we take it back to the Earl, who can read it. It is a letter from Sir Nero, who claims to be high commander of the northern host. It seems that the remnants of King Lot’s forces, who had been defeated by King Arthur some years ago, has allied with the Picts and are offering to aid the Saxons by attacking King Arthur from the North, whilst the Saxons strike from the South and East.
We rush to take the letter to the King to warn him, whilst the Earl starts to organise his army to follow.
King Arthur is a bit annoyed by this, but thankful that we found and took the letter to him. Sir Gawain, who is one of the sons of King Lot, swears that he knows nothing about this. As a Knight of the Round Table, Sir Gawain and the rest of his brothers are firmly on the side of Arthur.
Once Arthur’s army is ready, we head north towards Lincoln.
